February 23 marks the fifth annual Student Press Freedom Day, a day of action dedicated to uplifting the work of student journalists and bringing the issues surrounding student media freedom to the forefront of public attention.
Statement on Freedom to Read Week and Champions of Free Expression
Today, the Book and Periodical Council’s Freedom of Expression Committee announced that Co-Campaign Directors Spencer Izen and Jessica Kim have been named the Champions of Free Expression for 2023 for advocating for the rights of student journalists.

New SPFA Endorsements
The Canadian Association of Journalists, Canadian Civil Liberties Association, and Samuelson-Glushko Canadian Internet Policy and Public Interest Clinic have now endorsed the SPFA.

BC Freedom of Information and Privacy Association (BC FIPA) has recently nominated ourselves and the Student Press Freedom Act for the Peter Bryce Prize for Whistleblowing.
Why We Need The Student Press Freedom Act
Unjustifiable censorship, particularly of public interest student journalism, is profoundly antithetical to a free and democratic society and should not be tolerated. The SPFA will prevent it from occurring in BC’s public schools.
